Piroxicam in Muscular Disorder associated with Myalgia


Abstract
Among muscular diseases causing myalgia, excepting traumatic, neurogenic and endocrine origin, :Extra-articular rheumatism" is most frequently encountered.
Commonest and most important of these rheumatic soft tissue conditions are polymyositis polymyalgia rheumatica (Diesease in which severe muscle pain is accompanied by marked signs of humoral inflammation, with characteristic absence of histological changes in the muscles.), tendomyosis known as `muscular rheumatism¢¥.
A clinical study was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of Piroxicam in 40 patients who had complained myalgia visited to the out¢¥patient department of orthopedic surgery of Seoul Red Cross Hospital from Jul. 1982 to Nov. 1982.
Medication was started on a 2-day course of a single daily dose of 40mg or divided b.i.d., following breakfastor a light meal. This was followedby a 20mg single daily dose for i^-2 weeks. Follow-up evaluations were scheduled on Days 2,7 and 14.
The conclusions were as follows;
1. On clinical response of Piroxicam 11 patients (27.5%) at 1 week and 29 patients (72.50) at 2 weeks achieved marked to moderate improvement.
2. On overall evaluation at 2 weeks 26 patients (65%) showed complete to marked improve ment on dissappearance of inflammatory symtomes and 29 patients (72. 5%) showed coin plete to marked improvement on relief of pain.
3. Side effects were indigestion in 3 patients (7.5%), epigastric pain in 2 patients (5%). Treatment had to be discontinued in 1 patient who experienced Nausea and vomiting.
4. Piroxicam is well tolerated, highly effective non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent with important advantage of a single daily administration.
